Closest isn't always most convenient
Strasbourg-Entzheim wins on distance, but it is a small airport: depending on where you start, it may not have a direct route at all. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse is considerably further in kilometres and serves far more destinations. Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden sits in between, with one practical advantage — it is already on the German side of the Rhine, so there is no border to cross on the way to Rust.
